CITY OF LAUREL PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
2016 END OF THE YEAR REPORT
The Public Works Department is responsible for the management and maintenance of the city’s streets, fleet, sanitation and drainage through ensuring adherence to applicable codes and regulations. These activities are carried out utilizing in-house staff, outside firms and companies, and various other governmental agencies.
The Public Works Department collected:
Rubbish – 14,994 cu. yds. –equal to approximately 7 NFL football fields with a height of 1 foot.
Debris – 29,796 cu. yds. –equal to approximately 14 NFL football fields with a height of 1 foot.
Total number of completed work orders are 2,057:

The Mayor and City Council approved the purchase of one 20 yard garbage truck.
7th AVENUE ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS
Funding Source: City Bond Issue & Water/Sewer Fund
Total Project Cost: Approximately $1.3 Million
Project includes roadway subsurface improvements, overlay and striping of 7th Avenue from 5th Street to 15th Street.
MASON & GARDINER PARKS IMPROVEMENTS
Funding Source: MDOT Transportation Enhancement Funding with Match
Total Project Cost: Approximately $400,000 ($100,000 Local Share)
Project includes pedestrian bridges in Mason and Gardiner Park, and wayfinding signage
6th AVENUE DECORATIVE LIGHTS
Funding Source: Homeowner Loan/Assessment
Total Project Cost: Approximately $175,000
Project includes decorative lights between 12th street and 5th street.
AIRPORT WATER AND SEWER UTILITY PROJECT
Funding Source: Airport Funded
Total Project Cost: Approximately $61,000
Project includes new water and sewer line installations at Laurel Airport.
DAPHNE CREEK TRAIN PAVILION
Funding Source: MDOT Transportation Enhancement Grant with City Match
Total Project Cost: Approximately $370,000
Project will include restoration of train in Daphne Park with pavilion, lighting, landscaping and sidewalk improvements.
UNDER CURRENT CONSTRUCTION
2016 OVERLAY PROJECT
Funding Source: City Bond
Total Project Cost: Approximately $10 Million
Project will include overlay and milling/overlay of numerous streets throughout the city.

NRCS DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS
Funding Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture NRCS
Total Project Cost: Approximately $252,500 ($63,125 Local Share)
Project includes drainage improvements near Elmo St., Mason Park at 15th street, and Oak Park Blvd.
BROWNFIELDS EPA GRANT PROJECT
Funding Source: EPA
Total Project Cost: Approximately $400,000
Project includes performing environmental assessments on several properties in the City of Laurel.
5TH AVE. & CENTRAL AVE. IMPROVEMENTS
Funding Source: MDOT TAP Application
Total Project Cost: $705,000
Project will include the realignment of the flagpole, roundabout, pedestrian and drainage improvements.
LEONTYNE PRICE BLVD GATEWAY PROJECT
Funding Source: MDOT LPA Funding with Match from City Bond Issue
Total Project Cost: Approximately $5 Million ($1 Million Local Share)
Project includes roadway and pedestrian improvements along Beacon Street from MDOT ROW to Central Avenue.
2016 PHASE III SEWER IMPROVEMENTS
Funding Source: SRF Low Interest Loan
Total Project Cost: Approximately $3.2 Million
Project will include sewer main replacement and rehabilitation at various project sites that will be determined during the facilities plan development. If funded, construction phase would likely begin in FY 2017.
