Job Description

Purpose of Position

 

 

Drive City garbage trucks and assist with the removal and disposal of all City refuse

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

 

 

Drive City garbage trucks

Receive appropriate garbage route from Laborer Supervisor

Drive garbage truck along route

Ensure all garbage is properly collected

Drive garbage truck to City waste site

Dump garbage in appropriate location

 

Collect all residential and commercial refuse

Follow appropriate garbage routes and collect garbage

Take garbage truck to City waste site

Dump garbage in appropriate location

Clean garbage truck after use

 

Collect excess debris on weekly basis

Follow predetermined routes and examine streets for excess debris

Remove debris, as needed

Unload debris at appropriate location

 

Maintain departmental equipment and facilities

Perform light maintenance on equipment, as needed

Ensure automotive fluids are properly maintained

Wash trucks on weekly basis

 

Perform other duties as directed

 

Job Context

 

 

 

The Equipment Operator II is a full-time, permanent position in the Sanitation Division. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Sanitation Laborer Supervisor II. The person in this position is supervised on a daily basis and has no supervisory authority. The Sanitation Driver works regular hours most of the time with occasional overtime and night work when the workload demands it. There is no shift work involved with this position. The person in this position is occasionally on call. 5% of the work for this position is indoors; 95% is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions. The position has accountability for safety and legal issues related to the work for which this position is responsible.

 

There is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis. This exposure includes, but is not limited to, refuse, bacteria, germs and various types of cleaning chemicals. The stress level associated with this position is average.  Physical work involved with this position includes, but is not limited to, lifting heavy objects, climbing up and down garbage trucks, bending, and kneeling.

 

Requirements

Certification, Education and Experience

 

 

Certification: A valid “Class A” Commercial Driver’s License is required for this position.

Education: A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for this position.

Experience: At least 2 years of experience in this or a related field is required for this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

 

Knowledge:

Proper operation and basic maintenance of garbage trucks

Layout of City streets

Locations of other City properties

City garbage routes

Procedures and methods for cleaning various types of surfaces

Proper storage and use of cleaning chemicals

Proper grammar and proper use of English in speaking and writing

Federal and state statutes concerning the work of the department

Mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division and multiplication

General functions and operations of municipal government

 

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to supervise hoppers and to work as a team member with other employees

Operate departmental garbage trucks

Complete garbage routes within specified time restraints

Work as a team member with other employees

Meet specified or required deadlines

 

Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, etc., both oral and written

Maintain confidentiality

Work autonomously when necessary

Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions

Deal with others in a professional manner

Maintain professional composure in heated situations

Follow departmental and City policies and procedures

 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Ability to bend, stoop, and crouch frequently

Must be capable of extending the hands and arms in any direction; handling, seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hands/fingers

Must be able to climb up and down garbage trucks frequently

Must be able to work in all weather conditions
