Job Context

The Equipment Operator is a full-time, permanent position in the Drainage Division of the Public Works Department.
The immediate supervisor for this position is the Drainage Laborer Supervisor II. The person in this position is supervised on a
daily basis and has no supervisory authority. The Equipment Operator works regular hours most of the time with occasional
overtime and night work when the workload demands it. There is no shift work involved with this position. The person in this
position is not on call. 100% of the work for this position is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions.
The position has accountability for safety and legal issues related to the work for which this position is responsible.
There is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis. This exposure includes, but is not limited
to gasoline, concrete, diesel fuel, dust and various other fluids associated with machinery operations. The stress level associated
with this position is average. Physical work involved with this position includes, but is not limited to, heavy lifting, walking,
bending, sitting for long periods of time, and climbing up and down from machinery

Purpose of Position
Maintain City ditches and repair and maintain concrete structures throughout the City using smaller types of heavy equipment

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain concrete City ditches
Inspect ditches for problems or potential problems
Obtain appropriate supplies to repair ditches
Operate departmental equipment in order to pour concrete

Install concrete covers for pipes
Assure that pipes are properly installed for covers
Pour concrete over existing pipes
Ensure concrete properly dries

Install and maintain City street bricks
Inspect structures for problems or potential problems
Obtain appropriate supplies to repair ditches
Operate departmental equipment in order to pour concrete and maintain existing bricks
Allow concrete to dry
Ensure driveways are properly maintained

Clean out storm drains, as needed
Receive work order
Examine storm drains for blockages
Clean out drains by operating departmental blower
Remove excess debris from storm drains
Perform preventive maintenance on storm drains

Assist with maintaining City streets, as needed
Fill potholes using appropriate materials
Add asphalt to appropriate areas
Complete crack sealing as needed or directed

Perform other duties as directed


Certification, Education and Experience

Certification: A valid driver’s Class A CDL license is required for this position.
Education: A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for this position.
Experience: At least 1 year of experience in this or a related field is strongly recommended for this position.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
Ability to bend, stood, and crouch frequently
Must be capable of extending the hands and arms in any direction; handling, seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise
working with the hands/fingers
Must be able to climb up and down trucks frequently
Must be able to work in all weather conditions
