Job Description

The City of Laurel, Ms is currently seeking candidates for a position of Public Works Director.  This is a full-time salaried position.  The person in this position works regular hours with some night and weekend work and is always on call.

The Public Works Director has the primary responsibility for the organization, operation, and overall performance of the Public Works Department, which includes the divisions of Street Maintenance, Drainage, Sanitation, and Auto Shop.  Essential duties of the position include overseeing budgetary operations, ensuring proper organization and use of personnel, performing administrative duties of the Public Works Department, and developing and recommending policy options and alternatives for consideration by the City council.  The person in this position has accountability for monetary, fiscal, budgetary, safety, and legal issues related to the department.

The right candidate should have knowledge of Public Works Operations, including construction, engineering, maintenance, office and business procedures, and possess basic computer skills.  Organization and experience in management and supervisory  principles and practices, as applied to municipal government, are desired.  Experience in municipal procedures related to finance, personnel, purchasing, office operations, risk management, and public relations desired.  The right candidate should possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, news media, employees, external agencies and organizations, and The City Council.  Candidate should also possess superior leadership, communication, and people skills, as well as a high degree of personal integrity.




  • Associates Degree in Civil Engineering, Drafting, or related field in strongly recommended
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Masters’ Degree in Public Administration, Civil Engineering, or related field is preferred
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in Municipal Engineering or related field preferred
