LPD Swears in New Officer and Promotes Five

Dawn Garcia is the newest additions to the Laurel Police Department after Mayor Johnny Magee swore her in during a ceremony at City Hall Thursday morning. Garcia is a graduate of Jones County Junior College and comes to LPD as a 2010 graduate of Southern Regional Public Safety Institute. Prior to joining the LPD, Garcia served with the Virginia Department of Corrections and holds a Masters Degree in Criminology from Saint Leo University.

The Laurel Police Department also celebrated five promotions in addition to the new hire.

Earl Reed was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and will serve in CID. Reed has 21 years of service with LPD.

Gary “Doug” Dickerson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and will serve as Evidence/Grants Officer. Dickerson has 10 years of service with LPD.

David Grasha was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and will serve as a Training Officer. Grasha has 11 years of service with LPD.

Joey Decuir was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and will serve on Patrol Shift A. Decuir has 11 years of service with LPD.

Mitch Sumrall was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and serve on Patrol Shift B. Sumrall has 12 years of service with LPD.

The leadership of the police department has done a great job filling in for people that have transitioned to other agencies and keeping the department at a strong and healthy balance. The addition of Garcia boosts the force to 59 officers.
