Trick or Treating Hours
Posted on: October 21, 2014
The City of Laurel has set the official hours for Halloween trick-or-treating in the city this year for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 31.
“Because Halloween falls on a Friday, we want to give children time on the streets to have fun while trick-or-treating, but we are also mindful of high school football Friday.” said Mayor Johnny Magee. “There is a potential for the city to have more than normal traffic and we thought it best to move the time of trick-or-treating up an hour. We want the kids to be as safe as possible. ”
Drivers are asked to be especially cautious and aware of their surroundings for the potential of excited children entering the street while trick-or-treating.
Some Halloween safety tips include stopping only at familiar homes where outside lights are on, reminding them not to enter homes or cars of strangers and encouraging them to trick-or-treat before dark. It is also suggested that parents make sure older children trick-or-treat with friends and that parents map out a safe route.
Costumes should be kept short to prevent falls, use make-up instead of masks (which can obstruct a child’s view) and make sure children wear light colors or put reflective tape on costumes.
“Safety within the community is a key concern always, but especially on Halloween,” said Magee.
