According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to be a Category 1 hurricane when it makes landfall. As of 11:00 a.m. CDT today, the anticipated landfall site was the coast of southeast Louisiana and winds are expecting to reach 90 mph. Jones County is under a Tropical Storm Watch. The NWS is predicting 40 to 50 mph winds to reach the area sometime Tuesday. There is a possibility of 50 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts.
The county could receive between 9 to12 inches of rain. The main threat to our area is high winds, flash flooding and possible tornadoes.
The Laurel School District will release students early on Tuesday, Aug. 28 with middle and high dismissing at 11:30 am and all elementary schools at 12:15. School will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 29.
The City of Laurel has decided to close City offices at noon tomorrow and will be closed all day Wednesday in anticipation of the storm. Public Works will be picking up garbage tomorrow, Tuesday, August 28 and hopes to be completed before noon. Emergency personnel will be on call.
The Cameron Center will be used as an emergency shelter and the LT Ellis Center will be opened as an overflow.
