Built in the 1840's, the Deason Home is Jones County's oldest home. The house, located in nearby Ellisville, was built from hand hewn heart pine timber and has an unusual hexagon shaped entrance. Major Amos Mclemore, a Confederate officer, was murdered in the house in 1863 by the notorious Newt Knight, a deserter of the Confederate Army during the War between the States who hid with a band of deserters in rural Jones County. Many fascinating tales are connected to the lives of its former occupants. The home is now owned and operated by the Tallahala Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
