Laurel City Council voted to accept a nearly $5 million bid from Hemphill Construction Co. of Florence to repair and replace the city’s sewer system set to begin in August. With plans already approved by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and a Water Pollution Control Revolving Loan in place, the city is set to fund the year-long project that will be the first major upgrade in 60 years. Hemphill will replace 16,000 feet of sewer pipes and repair 18,000 more feet of pipe on 10th Street, 21st Avenue, Central Avenue, 5th Avenue, Old Bay Springs Road, Queensburg Avenue, Martin Luther King Avenue, the Chestnut area and the Homewood community.
