Tony Wheat serves as the Director of Public Works for the City of Laurel, bringing more than 25 years of dedicated service to his hometown. A lifelong resident of Laurel, Tony has deep ties to the community and has spent much of his career working to improve city services and infrastructure.
Before taking on his current role, Tony served as a Laurel City Councilman for Ward 2 for 16 years and also oversaw the City of Laurel Civil Service Commission. His career includes extensive leadership and financial management experience, having served as CFO for both Fairchild Construction and Ferry Transportation, as well as owning and operating two Subway restaurants in Laurel. Most recently in his career, he worked as an accountant for Whitestone Transportation and managed a high school sports newspaper covering eight counties.
Tony is a proud graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting followed by an MBA in finance and management. His commitment to community service extends beyond city government—he also served two terms on the board of the Animal Rescue League in Laurel.
Outside of work, Tony is an avid sports fan and a lifelong supporter of Ole Miss football. In years past, he has enjoyed playing in recreational softball and basketball leagues.
The public works department oversees several services provided to citizens especially those linked to supporting the city’s infrastructure. These include maintaining the city’s streets, roads, and public buildings as well as maintaining and operating the city’s drainage facilities and central garage. The public works department also oversees the collection and disposal of garbage, brush, and household hazardous waste and provides engineering services for construction projects including design and supervision.
