City Beautiful welcomes spring by cutting ribbon on health-focused business

For most, by the time that the rainy days of January have come and gone, so too, have most New Year’s resolutions.  However, in the City Beautiful the end of winter did not mark the end of healthy goals as evidenced by two late February ribbon cuttings in the city.

On February 14, 2024, Keys 2 Wellness celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Jones County Chamber of Commerce. The following week, on February 21^st Planet Fitness followed suit.

Valentine’s Day was the perfect day for Dr. Felicia Keys to celebrate the opening of her wellness services business because Keys has had to demonstrate a lot of heart in her journey to wellness. As she explained during the ribbon cutting ceremony, she was diagnosed with lupus eleven years ago and later suffered a major stroke which left her incapacitated. She was in a wheelchair and doctors told her that she would likely never walk again. She was also taking 36 different prescription medications. “This is no way to live,” Keys told herself. “I’ve always had a passion for taking care of others. I can’t live this. What can I do to better myself?”

Determined to prove the doctors wrong, Keys started working on being able to walk again. After that, she decided to keep improving her body and her mind ultimately earning a Ph.d in nursing and becoming a nurse practitioner.

Keys 2 Wellness offers a variety of services and holistic care including male testosterone therapy, hormone replacement therapy, weight management, hydration therapy, physical exams, immunizations, and more.

On February 21, 2024 the long-awaited Planet Fitness facility opened on Leontyne Price Blvd. in the former County Market building. “We want to welcome Planet Fitness to downtown Laurel,” Mayor Johnny Magee said during their noon ribbon cutting ceremony. “We like to eat in Laurel so this is a good place to come and work that off!” The Laurel location is one of 2,500 Planet Fitness gyms across the United States.
