DJ Transit: A Lifeline for the Laurel Community

January 23, 2025

On January 7th, at 10 a.m. DJ Transit hosted a Town Hall event to celebrate the importance of public transportation and to honor its most loyal local advocates.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from Executive Director Deshella Butler, who emphasized the vital role that DJ Transit plays in supporting the city's mobility needs. The invocation was provided by Councilman George Carmichael, who shared his appreciation for DJ Transit, underscoring its importance to the community.

A special highlight of the event was the appearance of community advocate Mr. Edgar A. Garcia, a long-time Laurel resident and successful business owner who has called the city home since 1955. Garcia, who will turn 90 this year, reflected on his decades-long connection to Laurel, sharing his love for the city and the people who have shaped his life. He spoke passionately about the impact DJ Transit has had on him personally, describing how the service has been a lifeline for his wife, who relies on dialysis treatments. He expressed deep gratitude for the service, noting that without DJ Transit, he would have been unable to provide her with the care she needs.

Garcia’s story resonated with many in the audience, emphasizing the crucial role of DJ Transit in supporting those who require transportation to medical appointments, especially for elderly or mobility-challenged individuals. He also took a moment to encourage community members to visit their loved ones in care centers, noting the emotional support that is so deeply appreciated by those residents.

In recognition of outstanding service, DJ Transit honored two exceptional drivers: Sheila Johnson and Ira Terrell. They were presented with awards for their service by Edwin Jackson, Operations Supervisor at DJ Transit. Both drivers were praised for their dedicated and compassionate service. Their tireless efforts have helped make DJ Transit a trusted and reliable transportation service for many.

Further recognition was given to Dr. Vernon Graves, who received the prestigious MPTA (Mississippi Public Transit Association) Friend of Transit Award. Evelyn Bumpers, President of MPTA, presented the award, commending Dr. Graves for his unwavering support of public transit in the region.

The event concluded with an open forum and Q&A session led by Deshella Butler, allowing attendees to ask questions and engage in a conversation about the future of DJ Transit and its services to the Laurel community.

This Town Hall event not only celebrated the accomplishments of DJ Transit but also reaffirmed its importance in the lives of many Laurel residents. As the city continues to grow, DJ Transit remains a crucial part of the community, providing affordable, reliable, and compassionate transportation options to those in need.
