Students at Laurel Magnet School of the Arts recently had the opportunity to embark on an extraordinary journey through the cosmos with the help of William Carey University’s Mobile Planetarium. This hands-on, interactive experience allowed students to explore the wonders of the universe, immersing them in a virtual reality world in the sky that deepened their understanding of how planets function and interact.

As part of the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) culture, this event was made possible through collaboration with one of eight partner school districts that receive support and resources aimed at enhancing STEM education. This unique educational opportunity not only introduced students to astronomy but also highlighted the district’s focus on providing engaging, real-world learning experiences that inspire curiosity and creativity.

The event gave students a chance to engage directly with the science behind the planets, stars, and galaxies, allowing them to ask questions and make connections to what they’ve learned in their classrooms. By bringing science to life in such a dynamic way, the Mobile Planetarium helped to spark a deeper interest in the field of astronomy and encouraged students to consider potential careers in STEM-related disciplines.

We extend our appreciation to William Carey University for their support in making this event a reality and are grateful for the opportunity to enrich our students' educational experiences. Through these partnerships, we are creating a future where curiosity is nurtured, and STEM learning is accessible to all.

We also thank our community for their ongoing support, and we look forward to sharing many more unique educational opportunities like this one with our students and parents. Together, we continue to build a brighter future for our young learners.

The City of Laurel, established as a lumber town in 1882, is conveniently situated approximately two hours from larger destination cities such as Jackson, Biloxi, New Orleans, and Mobile. In recent years, the city has become a destination all its own thanks, in part, to its starring role in HGTV’s popular “Hometown” series. As Laurel, and interest in it, continues to grow, we are committed to providing the resources necessary to help all of our residents and businesses reach their full potential.
