On Tuesday, April 22, at 4 p.m. Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee presented a key to the city to James Mulholland, 90, who began his career in music at age 12. Mulholland is a distinguished composer who has composed more than 600 pieces, many of which were featured at national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association.
In addition to receiving a key to the city, Mulholland was also honored with a plaque detailing his achievements which will be on permanent display at the Laurel Visitor’s Center.
“I work in the world of beauty,” Mulholland said. “I make beauty with my music, but this center and our museum and the businesses that are coming back to Laurel – I’m just so delighted that I’m being put in the same room with my idol Leontyne Price who I knew when I was a boy.”
During the ceremony, a brief choral concert was performed in his honor. Later that night, the choir also performed in Mulholland’s honor at First Trinity Presbyterian Church.
