Magnet School requests Donations

June 28, 2022

The Laurel Magnet School Parent Teacher Organization is accepting donations for a program designed to incentivize students to do well on their tests. Mississippi public school students in 3rd through 6th grades will be required to complete the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP). This testing is designed to gage proficiency in English Language Arts, math, and science. The PTO would like to motivate their students to do well on the test by offering an iPad to each student who scores proficient on the test. According to PTO President Phyllis Snowden, “All students who meet their proficiency goal will have their name entered into a drawing for a chance to win an iPad! Our goal is for all students who meet their goal to receive a device.”

Interested parties can donate by dropping off new iPads to the school directly at 1125 N. 5th Avenue or by sending a check made out to the Laurel Magnet School PTO. The devices currently cost $329.00 before taxes.

The City of Laurel, established as a lumber town in 1882, is conveniently situated approximately two hours from larger destination cities such as Jackson, Biloxi, New Orleans, and Mobile. In recent years, the city has become a destination all its own thanks, in part, to its starring role in HGTV’s popular “Hometown” series. As Laurel, and interest in it, continues to grow, we are committed to providing the resources necessary to help all of our residents and businesses reach their full potential.
