On Monday, May 12th at 11 a.m., Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee made a visit to Comfort Care Nursing Home kick off their weeklong festivities for National Nursing Home Week.

During a brief ceremony, he presented Nursing Home Administrator Alex Pippen with a proclamation to declare the week of May 12th to 18th as National Nursing Home Week in the City of Laurel.

Each year, Comfort Care treats residents and staff members to a week-long celebration with special events and guests, usually based on a theme. This year featured a circus themed day, a 70s day where an Elvis impersonator came to entertain the residents, and a western day.

“National Nursing Home Week gives us a chance to highlight the team players we have here who provide care 24/7,” Pippen stated.

Activities Director Lisa Young said that the week is “a good time for the staff and the residents to celebrate together.”

Pippen stated that he and the staff at Comfort Care appreciated the support provided by Mayor Magee. “Mayor Magee’s support for Comfort Care and the National Nursing Home Week is appreciated. He has supported us every year and it means the world for our mayor to support us and bring awareness.”

The proclamation read as follows:

Whereaswe honor and respect our elders and citizens of any age who reside in skilled nursing home centers in Laurel, Mississippi; and,

Whereas, the citizens of Laurel and Jones County now residing in nursing homes have contributed immeasurably to the heritage, success and growth of our community; and

Whereas, our nursing home residents of any age or ability are themselves living history and a precious resource that should be treasured by all Mississippians; and

Whereas, the staff and volunteers in nursing homes help residents live life to their fullest potential by providing a holistic approach to long term care and who sacrifice time and effort each day in doing for others; and

Whereas, South Central Regional Medical Center’s Comfort Care Nursing Home is holding events in observance of National Nursing Home Week, May 12 to 18, 2025, to recognize the many acts of kindness that happen in skilled nursing homes every day

Now therefore, I, Johnny Magee, Mayor of the City of Laurel, urge all citizens to visit a loved one, family member or friend residing in any care setting and offer a kind word, a personal touch, and spend time with those from all walks of life in need of our continuing love and support.

IN WITNESS THEREOF, I HAVE HEREUNTO SET MY HAND AND CAUSED THE SEAL OF THE CITY OF LAUREL, MISSISSIPPI, TO BE AFFIXED THIS THE  12th    DAY OF   MAY  , A.D. 2025.

The City of Laurel, established as a lumber town in 1882, is conveniently situated approximately two hours from larger destination cities such as Jackson, Biloxi, New Orleans, and Mobile. In recent years, the city has become a destination all its own thanks, in part, to its starring role in HGTV’s popular “Hometown” series. As Laurel, and interest in it, continues to grow, we are committed to providing the resources necessary to help all of our residents and businesses reach their full potential.
